ALBUM OF THE MONTH

Jeff Simmons "Lucille"

Album #78 is Jeff Simmons' Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up, produced by Frank Zappa.

The album was recorded in 1969 and released the following year.
Soon thereafter Simmons also made his debut as a member of Zappa's group The Mothers. He started out as bass player in Zappa's Flo & Eddie band, quit the band during the chaotic sessions for the 200 Motels movie but returned later as a rhythm guitar player (check out the Roxy & Elsewhere album).

The Lucille album is done in a 60's blues rock style and sure has some Zappa influences. It was initially released on his Straight label and he wrote the title track and co-wrote Wonderful Wino. He also played guitar on two tracks, Lucille and Raye.
Zappa later recorded new versions of Wonderful Wino and Lucille for albums of his own (Zoot Allures and Joe's Garage respectively).

The Lucille LP has been a hard-to-get-item for years but in 2007 the album was finally re-released on CD on the german label World In Sound. It was actually released as a 2 CD set including Simmons' soundtrack to the biker movie Naked Angels (1969).

Radio Dupree don't usually urge our audience to buy certain albums but we can say that we are very satisfied with the 2 CD set that we ordered directly from World In Sound in Germany. Looks great, sounds great, includes a couple of bonus tracks and comes with a neat booklet! You may want to check out their website:
