ALBUM OF THE MONTH

PINK FLOYD "Piper..."

Album #66 is Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

Ready for another celebration? Yes, Pink Floyd's debut was originally released in August 1967...40 years ago.

A lot of things has been said about this album. Nonetheless "Piper" is one of the most important psychedelic albums of all times. At that time Syd Barrett was the leader of the band and he wrote most of the songs on the album.
It features Barrett's romantic and naive pop lullabys about fairytale stuff like scarecrows and gnomes. Don't expect the sounds of The Dark Side Of The Moon or The Wall.

Syd Barrett was suffering from mental instability much due to the drugs he used, and eventually the other band members voted him out since they couldn't work together anymore.
The group took its first step in another direction, but the first album became a milestone in the history of psychedelic pop music.

In the UK the album reached # 6 on the charts.
Later Syd tried to go "solo" but would never reach the same level as he did with the early Pink Floyd.
Syd passed away in 2006.

S.H. - August 2007.
