COVER OF THE WEEK |
Cover # 33 is Gorilla from The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. So what's this record doing here and on our playlist? Gorilla was the 1967 debut album by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, a band some proclaim the "greatest satirical British pop band of all time." Be that as it may, but there's no denying that the cover of the album can make you think of another bunch of funny guys from the British isles; Monty Python: The members of the group dressed up in funny outfits and jumping and walking and standing around a giant gorilla. Basically the same age as teh Python guys and sharing the same interest in music-hall/vaudeville comedy and entertainment it all adds up to a very British type of comedy. The band also took on the openings offered by adding rock to the mix, although Gorilla is still very much an album of starting to explore. It's more trad-jazz roots than London pop-rock scene of the moment. Working its way through a number of line-ups between 1964 and 1970, the core remained the groups two main writers Neil Innes and Viv Stanshall. Becoming
friends with the Beatles Paul McCartney produced their biggest
hit; "I Am The Urban Spaceman", which appeared
in 1968 on the bands second album Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse.
