COVER OF THE WEEK

ZAPPA "Filmore East, Live 1971"

Cover # 30 is Cover # 29 is maybe the simplest of all Frank Zappa album covers ever made: Fillmore East, Live 1971. It's just a white jacket with song titles etc. hand written on it, just like a test pressing or a bootleg. It's a guess that Zappa may have got the idea from record sleeves of early bootlegs. Note what the liner notes say: "Cover by Cal Schenkel (he made me do it)".

A few words on the music: This is the Flo & Eddie band captured live on June 5th and 6th 1971 just prior to the closing of The Fillmore East in N.Y.C. The album is kind of a short version of The Mothers live show at that time, which dealed a lot with rock'n'roll mythology like groupies and such.

The technology of making live recordings wasn't very developed in those days and so the sound quality on the album is quite poor. The sound isn't very clear at all and there is some distorted high end on the vocals.
We are referring to our vinyl copy here but have heard that the CD version isn't satisfying on other terms. Hafta check that out though.

PS. Note that there are some vocal overdubs done on this very fine live album.
